Behold, the holy grail of all gluten-free croissants. I know, I have kept this gem from you for way too long. Hidden in an inconspicuous street in one of my favorite parts of Amsterdam lies the best (celiac-safe) gluten-free bakery you will find in the city, and possibly the world. A few months ago, I told you about our stay in Paris and how the gluten-free bakery we visited was very nice, but that the croissants did not compare to those I got at home. Well, after a couple of months getting used to the new phase in my life of working full-time, I’m finally ready to tell you!
The Best Bakery in Town
Craft Coffee and Pastry is the adorable bakery located in the Gerard Doustraat in De Pijp. Small but mighty, her doors open from 10PM to 4AM every Wednesday up until Saturday. Her opening hours are the only downside, as I would of course love a fresh croissant every day of the week! The bakery also has an establishment in Almere, and I heard it is less busy there, so don’t forget to check that one out when you visit the city.
The bakery was founded in 2020 by a couple named Gerry and Nilüfer, after they found out Gerry had celiac disease. On a quest to recreate all the baked goodies they love so much, they decided to start a gluten-free bakery that would serve all gluten-free people’s needs. And they sure succeeded! The interior of the bakery is very cozy, with a small seating area where you can enjoy a pastry with a cup of coffee if you want. With a counter displaying all their goodies in front, and the bakery in the back, the place has a low-key and transparent vibe.
Of course, when you get there, you should definitely get a croissant. My favorite is the one filled with chocolate, but they also have natural, almond, and ham and cheese variants. I also love to get some fresh bread here for my elaborate sandwiches, or their fresh baguettes if I’m having drinks and snacks with friends. Beside the more ‘standard’ offers, they also have fresh, gluten-free cannoli, of which I am a huge fan since our trip to Sicily, and several pastries, muffins, and cookies. I personally love the pistachio pastry and their ‘stroopwafels,’ a true Dutch sweet. If you’re there during New Year’s Eve, also try their gluten-free ‘oliebollen,’ the traditional Dutch NYE snack. And as if they could not be any more awesome, they also offer a variety of vegan and lactose-free goodies!
How to Get There and What to Do in De Pijp
Now, if you plan on visiting Craft, make sure to get there in time as there’s always a line and they often sell-out. It is very easy to reach the neighborhood by tram and metro, or by foot as the bakery is very close to the city center. As I live in the city there is no need for me to stay in a hotel, but if you want to have a perfect breakfast every morning, I suggest you stay at the Sir Albert Hotel or any other hotel close to the bakery.
Of course, you won’t spend your entire stay in Amsterdam at Craft – although I would not judge you if you would. Luckily for you there is a lot to do in De Pijp. The street running parallel to the Gerard Doustraat hosts the famous Albert Cuypmarket: although it is very touristy, many locals still visit the market to get groceries or shop at the several jewelry stands. When I go to Craft, I often get a croissant and coffee to-go and stroll along the market. In summertime, Wessel and I usually buy some fresh fish and vegetables to cook some delicious dinner, with a crispy baguette on the side topped with some nice hummus and olives we got at the market too.
Make sure to check out the rest of De Pijp too, though! The neighborhood has some lovely boutique stores, cafés, and an amazing nightlife scene. It’s also close to the museum quarter and the Amstel River, where you could rent a boat and sail down the canals with your new gluten-free goodies and market-haul snacks. When you get to Craft and snap lovely pictures in De Pijp, make sure to share them on Instagram with me through the hashtag #ambereatsinamsterdam. Make me jealous!

Hi guys! It would be amazing to hear what you think about this article, so don’t be shy <3 I'd love to hear from you!
Hello,
I’m visiting your lovely city in a few days and wanted to ask if your gluten-free pastries are also dairy-free…any options available? I’m allergic to dairy but not eggs.
Hi AnnMarie, thank you for your comment! If you wish to know more about their specific ingredients, I would recommend taking a look at their website or giving them a call. I have linked them in the blog post. If you click on their shop, you will see the different products they offer and if you click on those, you will see which ones are dairy free. To me it looks like there are plenty of options, but always make sure to contact the establishment you mean to visit if you are unsure. Enjoy Amsterdam <3
