With its pristine, crystal clear waters, white sandy beaches and fancy beach clubs, it is no surprise people call the country the Mediterranean Maldives. While it is perfect for a lazy summer vacation, the country is great for adventurists and luxurious travellers alike! Take a car to Theth for some gorgeous mountain trails, swim along the coast of Himarë, or learn more about the country’s history in the capital of Tirana. Prefer to chill and eat? Try some fresh seafood and drink an affordable cocktail with it, or two!
After having visited the pristine blue waters in Vlorë while hitchhiking in a military Landrover, strolled along Berat’s ancient streets, and cycled through Shkodërs, Wessel and I had gone through quite some educational experiences: both good and bad. This week we leave the blue waters of the Albanian coast, and travel to the countryside to visit one of the country’s UNESCO World Heritage Sites: the town of Berat. Also known as the city of a thousand windows, it hugs the river Osum amidst green hills.
