Nice to meet you! I’m Amber, a twenty-something year old travel lover and (gluten-free) foodie from the Netherlands. Although I grew up in a quaint little town called Zutphen, I have lived in Amsterdam for the past five years as a student. With a Bachelor in Musicology and a Master’s in Conflict Resolution and Governance, I am not only interested in what the next meal is going to be, but love to learn more about the cultural and political context of the places I visit as well. With every piece I write, I therefore try to be as sensitive to the context as possible, honest about my experiences and reflect upon how to leave a sustainable impact. Nevertheless, I still love writing guides about where to eat, sleep and visit, so expect to find a good mix of both. Furthermore, I am a sucker for karaoke and a good glass of wine, plus: I never say no to a concert!
Amber Eats Abroad has been roaming around in my head nameless and rent-free for years, until 2022, when I finally decided to invest my time and energy into this passion. Although I already made personal vacation vlogs, which never went public, I thought I could take it one step further. So, I started taking pictures of everything I ate, walked around outside with my camera ready, and continuously thought about blog ideas. Many free hours were, and are still, spent in designing and building this blog. To do so, I had to learn Adobe’s numerous programs, WordPress, and Elementor, and recently started to learn how to code html, css, and JavaScript, to eventually be able to build my website from scratch. Besides all the technical and aesthetic details, I decided I wanted to use Amber Eats Abroad as a critical and self-reflective food and travel blog, which means I do not try to sugarcoat my experiences too much, but still try to maintain a good sense of positivity and optimism about the future!
Currently, I am still learning, building, and growing. As the internet and social media landscape is so diverse, I still try to maneuver my way through. Still, you can expect to see me post travel and food blogs regularly. As I am gluten intolerant, you can also find many gluten-free recipes and gluten-free or gluten ‘conscious’ places to eat! Furthermore, my blogs will cover my personal experiences, take the form of sustainable travel guides, and provide contexts to the places visited. My philosophy is: to be able to live life to the fullest, we need to live consciously and be aware of the impact we have on the people around us and on this planet. I believe food and travel do have the potential to leave the world a better place, so through this blog I will take you on a journey to discover how that may be possible!
